There are many different causes of infertility in both men and in women. The primary source of infertility in men is a low sperm count. This can be due to constitutional and environmental factors. Chinese medicine can be used to increase circulation and body temperature, which may help improve sperm count. One remedy that may work well to treat this condition in combination with Chinese herbs is the enzyme, serrapeptase. Serrapeptase breaks down scar tissue and cystic tissue in the body while promoting circulation. For women suffering from polycystic ovarian disease, a number of herbs and essential oils may be useful. Saw palmetto berries are known to block the production of the type of testosterone known to cause the disease. Chasteberries may help reduce the tendency towards formation of ovarian cysts and help balance out a woman’s hormones. Cypress essential oil used externally may also reduce the formation of cysts. Generally, women with this condition often, medicine

Changing the body’s chemistry through holistic means may increase the likelihood of conception. There are also a number of essential oils that can help to balance out a woman’s hormonal and reproductive system while promoting fertility. Geranium,, medicine
, clary-sage, and rose essential oil all nourish a woman’s system and help to bring it back into homeostasis. Many times, there is no diagnosable reason or cause for infertility. In these cases, Chinese medicine can be highly effective in bringing back a woman’s mind, body, and spirit into harmonious balance, making her more receptive to conception. Chinese herbs can also be used to maintain, medicine
, a healthy pregnancy once conception has occurred. Certain herbs such, medicine
, as xu duan(teasel root) and tu si zi(cuscuta), have traditionally been used to discourage miscarriages and promote a healthy pregnancy. As you can see, there are a wide variety of ways in which Chinese Medicine and aromatherapy can be used to improve a couple’s likelihood of conceiving a child, while preparing the woman emotionally and physically for conception and pregnancy. Herb Gardening – A Focus on Basil

Posted in Home & Family on December 13th, 2009 and tagged , ,

Basil is a fantastic herb! It’s super easy to grow and is happy in almost all climates!

You can use basil in your favourite recipes, as a garnish or even as a year round decoration in your garden or kitchen!
Here are some good reasons to grow basil at home :

• Basil is one of the best culinary herbs there are! You can make your very own delicious pesto, Thai green curry, add some to a chicken salad and of course tomatoes and basil are just made for each other!
• Basil has a nice, strong smell – it will give your kitchen a sweet, subtle scent of fresh herbs or will give your garden a nice aroma.
• Basil helps repel fruit flies and other pests – because it has a strong scent, it confuses bugs that are trying to find your tastiest plants.
• It looks great! Some varieties such as opal basil have beautiful, deep purple flowers while others have tightly curved balls or more spiky-looking shapes.
• Basil has many traditional medicinal uses, if you’re interested in that sort of thing.

So you’ve decided to grow your own basil – now to getting things started…

Be sure to pick a nice sunny spot, basil doesn’t really like the cold! Then you can either buy a packet of seeds, or if you prefer, buy a tray of seedlings. Thirdly, use cuttings from a friend or a plant you come across. Basil seeds are tiny and can take several weeks to germinate,, home medicine, so if you are going to grow your basil from seeds, watch out the weeds don’t grow before the basil does! For cuttings just take a tip off any plant at any time of the year, cut off all the leaves leaving the smallest ones at the top and plant in a pot. Be sure to keep it moist and in anice shady area – it should root fairly quickly. Once it starts to grow again you can transfer it into the garden if you like.

As you might expect basil grows best in very fertile soil – the more food the bigger the leaves. Unlike lots of plants where overfeeding produces poor plants, underfed, home medicine, basil is less fragrant than a well fed plant. Give your basil frequent doses of fertilizer, such as kitchen waste or liquid manure throughout the growing season to keep up leaf production. The more often you pick, the more often you should feed! As you may already know, most cooking herbs taste best when you treat them harshly. They lose flavour if you constantly feed and pamper them. Not so for basil. You simply can’t feed basil too much! It will pretty much use everything you can throw at it and then some! Here are some ideas for what to feed basil : Kitchen waste, good quality compost, tea bags, chicken poo, fish fertiliser, mulch and rich leaves, anything.. Basil usually tastes best if you feed it well. If you want your basil to keep growing nicely and producing plenty of leaves, keep feeding it!

Having said that, basil has a very vigorous root system, so don’t worry if your soil is not very fertile. If you decide to grow your basil in the garden then the roots will go and find what the plant needs. So even if the soil is not the best, you can still grow plenty of basil. It also copes with not much water and can even do well in partial shade. However, it will do a lot better and have a much stronger flavour if you can grow it in full sun.

Although you can grow basil just about anywhere, it loves warmer weather, lots of sunlight, lots of food as mentioned and lots of water. Also make sure it has lots of space for its roots. The one thing basil can’t survive is frost, so if you live in colder climes for example you should consider growing it indoors, or as an annual. While strong, established plants can handle cool periods, getting basil started usually requires, home medicine, warmer weather. Use your judgment as to when to plant, for example if you live in a tropical area, you should be able to grow it all year round.

Of course you can germinate and grow basil seeds indoors, but be warned – the lack of sunlight during winter means they probably won’t grow, home medicine, into big, healthy plants. Your best bet is to harvest them very early and germinate more.

Sweet basil : best to grow from seeds as an annual
Bush basil/Perennials (all other varieties) : easiest to grow from cuttings

As for harvesting the most important thing to remember is to pick your basil often! If you don’t they might go to seed early and be a bit of a leggy plant. Also, be sure to pick off the flower heads to stop it blooming. This is to prevent the basil plants from using all their energy up making seeds, rather than delicious leaves!

This is especially true if you have only a few basil plants – it’s recommended you prevent them from flowering for as long as possible., home medicine, Once a basil plant goes to flower and has put all its energy into the blooms and seeds, it dies.
Once a mature plant starts to look a bit feeble, which it eventually will, just pull it up and plant a cutting in its place. That way, there should always be some fresh, fragrant basil around when you need it!

If you have a garden and want to grow a new patch of basil somewhere, be it for pest control reasons or just to enjoy the scent and the looks, then cut some dry flower spikes off of an old plant, rub them and crunch them up between your hands, and throw them over the soil where you want the basil to grow. Easy peasy.
